British Gurkha Army

The history of the service of the Brigade of Gurkhas to the British Crown goes back as far as 1815. Since then the Brigade has conducted itself with distinction during numerous conflicts worldwide. Prior to 1997 the Brigade's focus was in the Far East but following the handover of Hong Kong it moved to the UK which is now its base.

Selection is open once a a year at British Gurkha Army Camp Pokhara and Dharan Nepal. Only Nepalese youth from every part of Nepal (except Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur) and from every cast can apply!

Selection Process

Registration

The application form for Registration will be available at no cost at the Army Careers. Information Offices at British Gurkhas Pokhara and British Gurkhas Dharan. The PRs should bring the documents mentioned here on this site along with PT shorts and a black pen. The applicants shall do over arm heaves 8 times and a minimum of 76 kg mid-Thigh pull to register.

Regional Selection

Only those PRs who have submitted an application form and met the minimum criteria set out above will be permitted to attend Regional selection either in Pokhara or Dharan. Different dates for attendance will be allocated as per the District where a PR is registered according to their NPP. The applicants must present original documents mentioned here.


Physical Assessment :
  • 800 meter run : Best effort under 2 mins and 40 sec.
  • Repeated lift and carry (short) : 20kg burden carry from 1.5 platform over 30 meter followed by 30 m without burden. ( Best effort, 5 laps with burden, 4 without, in under 1 minute and 46 seconds)
  • Heaves : 10 Times.

Medical Check-up :
  • B.P. Check
  • Ear Check
  • Skin Check
  • Teeth Check
  • Eye Check ( Long Distance )
  • Colour Vision Check
  • Body Functional Check

Education assessment :
  • Maths : 45 minutes for a total of 15 questions
  • English : 20 minutes for a total of 20 questions

Interview :
  • By : Nepali and Gora Officer
  • Language : Both Nepali and English
  • Time : Apprix (5-15) minutes

Central Selection

Successful candidates at Regional Selection will be called forward for the Central Selection at british Gurkhas Pokhara Camp. During this period a series of physical, educational and medical assessments will be conducts. And Finally they get selected in this selection for Gurkha Army.


Physical Assessment :
  • BFT RUN :2000 meter run under 8 minutes and 10 seconds
  • Heaves : Minimum 12 times with no time limit
  • Repeated Lift and Carry Long : 435 meters of distance with Table Height 1.5 meter and Burden of 20 kg under 6 minutes and 15 seconds
  • Jerry Can Carry : 240 meters distance under 2 minutes and 10 seconds
  • Doko Race ( C.F.T ) : 5.8 km Distance under 48 minutes with 15 kg of load
  • Medicine Ball Throw : 4 kg Medicine Ball Throw from sitting position (best effort, throw over 3.10m)

  • Urine Test
  • B.P. Test
  • Audiometry Test
  • ECG Test
  • Heart Beat Check
  • Distance Vision Test
  • Peak Expiratory Flow Rate
  • Anus and Testes Check
  • Teeth Check
  • Upper and Lower Limbs Check
  • Full Body Screaming Check-up

Education Assessment :
  • Essay : 1 topic under 40 minutes
  • Comprehension : 2 topic (Paper-1 and Paper-2) with a total of 20 questions ( Each paper contains of 10 questions )
  • Listening : 1 topic and 10 questions under 9 to 10 minutes
  • Oral and Picture Description : Any topics with aprox 10 minutes

Interview :
  • Presentation & Interview in Nepali language
  • A total of 8 to 10 questions with time 4 to 5 minutes
  • Conducted by Nepali and Gora Officers

NECESSARY DOCUMENTS
  1. • Original Citizenship of the applicant and their parents.
  2. • Machine Readable Passport ( MRP ).
  3. • Marriage Certificate if applicable.
  4. • Birth Certificates of Children where applicable.
  5. • Parents Marriage Certificate if father's name is not mentioned on mother's or son's citizenship.
  6. • Parents Death Certificate if applicable.
  7. • Migration Certificate where applicable.
  8. • Caste Verification Letter where applicable.
EDUCATION CERTIFICATES
  1. • S.E.E Examination Mark Sheet.
  2. • District Level Examination Certificate.
  3. • Character Certificate.
EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
  1. • For those who attended Nepal SLC from 2016 onwards applying for British Army : Minimum 3XC and 2XD Grades with C grade minimum in Maths and English.
  2. • For those with ACSE, O Level or other National Certificates equivalent to SLC must have a minimum of 5 subjects with minimum grades of 3XCs snd 2XDs and must have a pass mark in English and Maths. SLC Compartmental pass (private SLC and Open Leaerning ) will be accepted. N Level and any vocational subject passed will not be accepted and considered for the five subjects.
PHOTO REQUIREMENTS
• 2 recently taken passport size photograph (Size : 35 mm by 45 mm) with their hair properly trimmed and without hat for registration. Any photograph where candidate has a long or unnatural hair shall not be accepted.
PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS
  1. • Height Mimimum : 158 cm
  2. • BMI : Between 18-28 (Central Selection)
  3. • Physique : Raised Legions or abnormalities preventing military service will not be accepted.
  4. • Teeth : No more than two faults (fillings, gaps or false teeth).
  5. • Sickness : An individual PR who is suffering from tansferable diseases shall not be accepted.
SONS OF EX-SERVICEMAN PERMANENTLY LIVING IN KATHMANDU VALLEY
• Sons of Ex-Serviceman from B.A. and GCSPF, who are permanently living in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur and have obtained NPP from Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur are eligible to register for selection from their respective district.
